London Olympics 2012: Marred By Serious Controversies

Sushil Kumar: Ensured India's Best Performance At Olympics

Sushil Kumar: Ensured India’s Best Performance At Olympics

Grappler Sushil Kumar’s
back-to-back medals at the Olympic Games-the first Indian sportsman to do so-enabled India to register its presence in a big way. It is India’s best performance at the Olympic Games. Sushil Kumar won silver medal in the 66kg free style category. He had won bronze in the previous Olympics held in China. However, one cannot ignore the recent spate of controversies which marred the London Olympics 2012. These infamous episodes have brutally hurt the sentiments of sports fans across the globe. The allegations related to biased decisions of referees have given a bad name to the 30th Olympic Games. Let’s not treat these allegations as shallow outbursts of teams lost. We need to take note of them in a serious manner in order to retain the faith of sports lovers.

Let’s not forget India’s boxer Vikas Krishan controversial defeat at the hands of Errol Spence of USA.The  AIBA overturned the result of his pre-quarterfinal bout, after five hours, following a review. The Indian contingent filed an appeal which produced no result. The IOA tried its best to drive home its point but the the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) rejected the country’s appeal.”There is no provision in the AIBA Technical and Competition Rules allowing for an appeal against the decision of the Competition Jury in relation to a Protest. The decision of the Competition Jury is final and cannot be appealed.”(CAS). In this regard, the argument of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) vice-President Tarlochan Singh is worth mentioning:”There are four different judges and they make their separate decisions. It is baffling why did none of them objected to this. Four people have given verdicts and it is wrong for USA to appeal after the decision has been given.”

Such biased decisions lower the morale of players and sports fans. The game is not on par with life and death issue, and, therefore,  it’s quite baffling to see big nations using every trick in the book to emerge as winner. It doesn’t matter to them if such a victory makes mockery of fair play. Such brazen display of unfair tendencies, all in the names of rules, brings into open the real character of such nations, who can go to any extent to gain an upper hand. The Indian contingent needs to view such murkier developments from fresh angle and come to understand that world of sports are not only regulated by excellence but also by shrewd maneuvers. It’s anybody’s guess that sports fans treat such sponsored victories less honourable than defeats keeping intact values associated with the game! The Indians need to grasp this fact that for some nations, the thing called dignity in defeat just doesn’t exist.

Vikas Krishan: Haunted By The Defeat

Vikas Krishan: Haunted By The Defeat

If that was not enough Amit Kumar’s defeat in 55 kg freestyle repachage against Bulgarian Radoslav Marinov Velikov gave rise to another controversy. Former Gold Medalist at Asian Games Satpal Singh, in an interview given to BBC, said that ‘ referees have turned highly professional. After watching the proceedings at the Games, I am pretty convinced that these referees have compromised with the values. You now cannot win the game without taking into confidence judges and referees involved with the game! The three points awarded to Bulgarian opponent, in actuality, belonged to the Indian wrestler Amit Kumar. These three points made the game slip away from the hands of Amit Kumar.”

It’s not only Indian contingent, which is feeling blue after the Games got over. Usain Bolt, who became the first athlete to win the 200 twice at the Olympics, harshly criticized Carl Lewis of United States for his doping remarks. At a press conference organized just after his historic victory in the men’s 200-metre, Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt minced no words in targeting Carl Lewis., ” I’m going to say something controversial right now…. Carl Lewis, I have no respect for him…. The things he says about the track athletes is really downgrading for another athlete to say something like that. I think he’s just looking for attention, really, because nobody really talks much about him” Bolt said. One needs to recall the words of Carl Lewis to realize that Bolt’s anger is justified.”Countries like Jamaica do not have a random program, so they can go months without being tested. I’m not saying anyone is on anything, but everyone needs to be on a level playing field.” Carl Lewis made this remark in an interview given to Sports Illustrated just after Bolt’s stunning performance in Beijing Olympics.

Now this battle of words might not be directly related to the controversies that marred the London Olympics 2012 but the timing of Bolt’s furious remarks is amazing. It provides clear insight about the affairs that take place behind the scene, which ordinarily remain hidden from the eyes of average sports fans. It makes it evidently clear that how bigger nations come to treat the victories of smaller nations. And if that becomes clear, it would not be pretty difficult to understand that India’s strong protest against the biased referees at the Olympics is not simply unleashing of frustration. It reveals that games have no longer remained events, solely dominated by the performance of committed athletes, trying to attain height of excellence. They are now dominated by forces beyond the control of players. India’s protest needs to be seen in the same perspective.

Politics Knocked Out Sports From London Olympics

Vikas Krishan: Victory Turns Into Defeat!

Vikas Krishan: Victory Turns Into Defeat!

The Indian boxer Vikas Krishan’s defeat at London Olympics is, in reality, victory of politics and not sports. Vikas Krishan emerged victorious in the 69 kg category bout against his American opponent Errol Spence 13-11. However, the happiness inside the Indian camp proved to be a short lived one. The review by the competition jury, under the aegis of AIBA, amended the final score 13:15 in favour of the USA. The jury members, accepting the protest, unanimously declared Errol Spence of the United States winner of the bout. India also filed the appeal later but the world governing body for the game rejected their appeal. So India’s sensational victory in the pre-quarter-final bout got doomed to nothingness.

It’s pretty unfortunate that some nations can go to any extent to gain an upper hand in battle of supremacy. The ouster of Vikas from the London Olympics proves the point that when politics gets mixed with sports, it leads to such nasty developments. Thanks to United States for letting us know that you cannot win boxing match without playing some politics! Before I have a take on the merit of the decision, I need to say that I am sure had  Indian Olympic Association as powerful as BCCI,  Board of Control for Cricket in India,  this would not have been the fate of the bout. Such happenings make it crystal clear that in present times, be its politics, cinema or sports, a certain shrewd manoeuvring, by people behind the curtain, always exists.

Imagine the team declared World Cup winner in FIFA World Cup Final match declared loser after few hours by the competition jury! Imagine another team declared winner by the ICC in the World Cup Cricket Final at Lords after few hours! The things would definitely become murkier in the world of sport if this sort of bizarre change becomes commonplace. This sort of crazy decision marks the beginning of manipulating decisions all in the name of laws! Anyway, let’s put under lens the merit of the decision. It’s strange that even those aspects were taken into consideration to make the bout in favour of USA, which generally cannot be judged by normal human way. The Competition Jury should have limited its review to those aspects only, possible for any referee to take note of them from normal human angle. To extend its limit to those angles, which no referee can intercept in normal way is absolutely nonsensical.

That’s why I feel that to award points only because “referee’s view was blocked by the boxer from the USA” is height of absurdity. It is okay to include the unnoticed fouls within the realm of review but to ensure “correct gesture” on part of referee, in name of review, totally defies logic. Why should he have awarded points when something was beyond the range of his normal vision? If that’s the case why India’s appeal got rejected on same grounds, wherein it had been stated that “our guy did not hold Spence for more than seven times. The American was guilty of holding Vikas four times according to us.”(That’s an observation on part of National coach Gurbax Singh Sandhu)

This high-voltage drama at the London Olympics reduces the difference between politics and sports. It’s really sad that hopes of bright athletes, boxers, swimmers and shooters, to name a few, get checkmated by the will of minds who feel that politics needs to go together with sports. The performers next time should not only learn the tricks involved in their respective fields, but also come to master the art of politics, if they are really interested in winning medals at Olympics!

Indian Blue Hunters Tame The Sri Lankan Lions To Emerge As World Champions!

Indian Blue Hunters Tame The Sri Lankan Lions To Emerge As World Champions!

Last time when India won the Cricket World Cup in 1983, the people of my generation were too young to acknowledge the worth of the India’s victory over West Indies. Since then we all wished to see India holding the Cup again. Now after 28 years, the Team India loaded with GenNext sentiments made possible for we guys to share the feelings of being a World Champion. We did it in style when Mr Cool struck a massive six over the long on in the 49th over bowled by Kulasekara. A classic and unique way to make the World Cup ours. It’s a memorable victory as unlike in 1983 when few thought that we would emerge as Champions, this time, however, we had to merely honour the expectations of billion plus people, who saw in Indian team the potential to emerge as a World Champion. And we did that in style by beating a formidable team. We didn’t provide the fans to feel disappointed like other times.

To be honest, I was not sure that India will emerge as World Champions even as Team India was hot favourite in the eyes of Cricket Pundits. The fielding was not up to the mark and our bowling lacked killer instincts. The turning point came when we defeated the Australians. The team showed a dramatic change in its attitude after defeating the three times World Champions Australia. We became like a disciplined army, who worked in tandem with well carved plan in an organized way. That made us to defeat another World Champion Pakistan in Semi-final. It wasn’t easy to tame the Sri Lankan lions, who were comprised of legendary players like Muralitharan and some real talented guys like Malinga, Sangakara and Mahela Jaywardene .

Indian Blue Hunters Tame The Sri Lankan Lions To Emerge As World Champions!

When Mahela Jayawardene made mockery of the Indian pace attack in final overs of their inning, I saw Sri Lankan fans giving big smiles. The Sri Lankan fans and Sri Lankan team were on seventh cloud after the dismissals of Tendulkar and Sehwag. However, the destiny had something else in store for them. The two Indian players who in rest of the World Cup matches hardly made significant contribution came to act as saviours. Gambhir and Virat Kohli by their cool and intelligent approach ensured that we would not let Tendulkar retire without World Cup in his record book. I am really unhappy that Man-of-the-Match went to Dhoni. I think the real credit need to be given to scintillating innings of Kohli and Gambhir during tense crucial phase of the game. They were the ones who brought India back in the game. Anyway, let’s hear what Gambhir has to say: “The 2007 World Cup was a nightmare, this was a dream come true. We’re so pleased for Sachin Tendulkar, this is for him.”

Indian Blue Hunters Tame The Sri Lankan Lions To Emerge As World Champions!

This World Cup saw end of the careers of many legendary players like Ponting. In this match we were seeing for the last time the two geniuses: Sachin and Murali. I must salute the attitude of this two great souls. I am sure we would have to wait for couple of centuries more to see such greatness again. Sachin has every moment to feel the heat of being the World Champions. This was the dream, which acted as no less than nightmare for him for past two decades. However, the emotions are hard to control when I hear him saying : “This is the proudest moment of my life – it’s never too late, as they say. The team stuck together and proved all the people who doubted us wrong.

We Indians, who are on route to emerge as new superpowers, are still devoid of moments that make us feel really great. The Indian cricket team new Avatara (incarnation) as World Champions has provided us some moments to be on top of the world. Let this inspire us to emerge as better human beings in other spheres of life. It’s time to celebrate. Along with noise of crackers, I can also hear the words of Gavaskar in my ears:

What a way to win the World Cup, with the Indian captain hitting a six! Look at Sachin Tendulkar out there, he’s like a little kid – this was the one medal missing from his collection. This is great for Indian cricket, and for India, as the country has had a few problems over the last few months – hopefully it will bring everyone together.”

India Stuns Pakistan Again In World Cup Cricket With Hopes To Kiss The World Cup Once More

India Stuns Pakistan Again In World Cup Cricket With Hopes To Kiss The World Cup Once More

India’s victory against Pakistan in semi-final of Cricket World Cup 2011 shall be remembered for a long time. This ‘mother of all the matches’ kept millions across the globe tense and anxious. The result was quite predictable but cricket is game of glorious uncertainties.Right from the beginning, the Indian fans were convinced that Pakistan had little chance of beating India. Both records and attitude of Indian Team signaled India’s victory. The 29 run victory came to confirm the signals of optimism. It had to be 5-0 and the victory made it a reality.

There was a dubious attempt to make the match a political drama. This was sabotaged as India has reached in the final dominated the post-match celebrations. The talk of cricket diplomacy hit the pre-match discussions. This is a sinister affair to make sport a mean to  serve political ends. Why should sport be a medium to better the tense relationship? What’s the need to blend cricket with politics? The premier tournaments should maintain a safe distance from such political dramas. The game should be treated like a game and not a round table conference.

Let’s talk about role of Tendulkar as well. Many dull headed critics always accuse him of never playing a match winning innings even as the record books suggest otherwise. In the very first clash between India and Pakistan in 1992 World Cup, played in Australia, Sachin was awarded Man-of-the-match. Sachin again made India attain victory over Pakistan in 2003 World Cup clash in South Africa by his classic innings of 98 runs. Needless to state, he was once again the Man-of-the-match.

India Stuns Pakistan Again In World Cup Cricket With Hopes To Kiss The World Cup Once More

Now at Mohali in 2011, we once again witnessed how he made Pakistan away from the door of victory. True, the lady luck made him survive four dismissal chances but can we deny the fact that his runs shaped the victory of India ? I am happy that all biased analysts will now think twice before stupidly suggesting that Tendulkar’s big innings are sometimes bad omens and counter-productive. Or, for that matter, just better his individual records! Oh yes, sounding deja vu, he became Man-of-the-match at Mohali as well!

Lastly, the Indian team has displayed a rare spirit. It’s now playing more like an organized group. It’s indicative of the fact that the Indians have gained the ability to perform better in tougher conditions. It also shows that team is learning the art to play as group and not as one man show. It’s time to deliver this collective spirit once again to make World Cup ours after we kissed it in 1983. Sri Lanka is a very good team. Let’s not blue waves commit the fatal blunder of ignoring the mighty roar of Sri Lankan lions. It’s time to tame the lions! It’s time to kiss the World Cup again!

Views On Sachin’s Double Ton Against Australia

Tendulkar :Still A Student Of Cricket !!!

Tendulkar :Still A Student Of Cricket !!!

Sachin’s double ton against  the Australians at Bangalore in the second test match has compelled the cricket stars of yesteryear to shower compliments on him. One of the readers who felt uncomfortable with the attention Tendulkar receives after every achievement was too eager to inform me that  world always salutes the rising sun. This reader was also of the opinion that  Sachin always played for the record and personal achievements.I leave it on the readers to anlayze the validity of criticism made by this reader but I didn’t hesitate to tell him that records and achievements are not the only parameters which define one’s greatness. The greatness of Sachin  lies not only the way he has scored runs but also the way he remained in league with humility all these years.A fact that has been taken note of by other great minds.I am now posting the views which will make readers aware of the impact generated by the Tendulkar’s charisma.

Sunil Gavaskar said :

A lot of people are calling Sachin Tendulkar a master. But the way he carries himself, he is still a student and therein lies his greatness. He talks to people and tries to learn from them.

The present generation will only talk about Sachin for another 50 years. I am sure about it as not many people could reach the target that Sachin had set now. He is focused always and that is the reason that nobody could reach his standards

Sir Vivian Richards:

The former West Indies captain said,”Tendulkar is the all time greatest cricketer.I am sure he will have more records to his credit.”

Tendulkar recent conquest of the 14,000 Test run summit, said, ”Only Sachin can achieve the kind of feat that he already has.

“Tendulkar is the No 1 entertainer in contemporary international cricket. He is a genius, and I knew he would hit a double ton in Bangalore,” he said.

John Mehaffey writes for Reuter:

So, too, is his ability to remain unaffected either on or off the field by the relentless glare of public adulation which makes a private life impossible in his native India.

No hint of scandal has touched the man who last weekend became the first person to pass 14,000 test runs in the second test against Australia and he remains the complete team player.

 Saurav Ganguly :

Sachin’s marks, I doubt will be reached by anyone

Tendulkar’s take on the views expressed after the double century :

Indeed, I am a student. I never want to close the learning window. This game is so deep that you can never say you know everything. I learn by even talking to players like Suresh Raina and Murali Vijay.

It’s a process began in my childhood and it’s very much on. Everyday I would like to improve. Each time I go to the wicket, I want to make it a special experience. Yes, I fail, but failure does not demoralise me because I know that if I prepare well, I will get an opportunity to succeed.

It is about what I want to do for my team. And I will not compromise on that.

I’ve played 20 years but that doesn’t mean that I know everything about cricket. It’s important to be a student of this game. That’s when you can actually learn and get better. Learning never stops.

Sir Don Bradman:Can We Ever Forget You ?

Lastly, let’s once again take note of the words of Sir Don Bradman about Tendulkar. These words are precious because Bradman rarely gave statements of any type in his later years.

Bradman said:

I never saw myself play but I feel that this fellow is playing much the same as I used to play, and she looked at him on the television and said, yes, there is a similarity between the two.

To me his compactness, his technique, his stroke production, it all seemed to gel as far as I was concerned.

Sachin Tendulkar Is Really The “Man Of The Century”

Sachin Tendulkar:The God Of Cricket

Sachin Tendulkar:The God Of Cricket

Sachin’s marvelous double century in the second test match in India Vs Australia series has proved beyond doubt that this man is a rare genius. The batting legend made 214 and 53 in the Bangalore Test Match to help India gain a historic series win against the Australians. A clean sweep that enabled India to attain number one spot in ICC test ranking list with 127 rating points, making Australia attain its lowest test ranking since the introduction of rankings.

The superb bowling and batting by the spirited Indians made the Australians bite the dust allowing Indians another blissful moment after series of blissful episodes in CWG games. The test series shall be remembered for Tendulkar’s heroic innings but one just cannot ignore the brilliant bowling spell by Harbhajan,Pragyan Ojha ,Sreesanth amd Zaheer which forced Australians to taste three successive Test loss after 22 years.Anyway ,I will restrict myself to Tendulkar awarded man of the match (second test) and man of the series. The Australian press has showered loads of compliments on this evergreen living legend by naming him “man of the century“.

The Sydney Morning Herald states that : “How he haunts the Australians. Last time they were in India, Ricky Ponting’s men watched him score his 13,000th run. In this Test he brought up his 14,000th and at times he seemed to be on his way to 15,000th. God alone knows when he will desist.” It stated further that Tendulkar remains ‘the one constant in an ever-changing cricket universe, ever present, always scoring. He has been at the crease for 21 years.’ The Age newspaper said: “The Little Master serves up a lesson. If October 10, 2010 was to be Sachin Tendulkar’s day, then the 11th was his honorary parade, one which may roll over the top of the hapless Australians in the second Test.” Peter Roebuck didn’t hesitate to call him “exceptional” who never misses to play compelling shots on every ball. The media there compared our little master with a kid “who wished it wouldn’t get dark “.

At this moment I will like to quote two memorable quotes that appeared in Indian media when he scored a double ton in an one-dayer against South Africa . The Times Of India then said that ” treasure this new, improved Tendulkar. He is, by far, still India’s most valuable player, and will remain so till he decides to call it quits.” The Hindustan Times paying rich tribute stated : ” To Sachin Tendulkar, on whom more words have been written than any other cricketer, including Sir Donald Bradman, two words will suffice: Thank you.” I am amazed at the improvisation level of Tendulkar. Not long back ago when Tendulkar was crippled with injuries like tennis elbow and other such problems there were rumours that his career may give to unfortunate end. Some so-called enthusiastic cricket pundits has already published obituaries speculating about his career in doldrums. However,Tendulkar rising from the ashes like a phoenix, always managed to silence the critics by playing scintillating shots in crucial innings against powerful teams like South Africa and Australia.

I find it remarkable that this guy named Tendulkar has mastered the art to remain cool in crisis. It’s never easy thing for a celebrity to add infamous chapters in one’s stardom via reckless behaviour. No wonder, Sachin in my eyes is owner of flawless popularity called “yash” in Hindi. One may be popular figure but one may not be “Yashashvi” (flawless popularity). At least, this guy has taught all of us that success should not go to your head. Let’s be humble when destiny gives you a reason to smile with episodes mired in success.

I will finish my article with what Anjali ,the wife of Tendulkar, has to say about this recent achievement of Tendulkar.” I am always excited. Whatever Sachin does, I am very excited. If he makes a double century I am all the more excited and if it is against Australia I am very excited. For me whatever he does I am very happy. Today, according to me his 53 was also very important, so I feel equally happy with that as long as we win,” said Anjali. It’s no secret that we Indians are also very excited when the “God of cricket” is in full form on a cricket field.

Commonwealth Games In Delhi Are Towards Record Breaking Sale Of Condoms !!

Grand Opening Ceremony CWG New Delhi 2010

Grand Opening Ceremony CWG New Delhi 2010

The 19th edition of Commonwealth Games in New Delhi is throwing one surprises after another. After a great hue and cry over the alleged corrupt deals by the top brass associated with the Games, the New Delhi managed to present a spectacular opening ceremony. It was such a fascinating opening ceremony that people started comparing the grand show with the one we witnessed in Beijing Olympics opening ceremony 2008.On the top of it, fascinating performances by Indian team members infused a sense of pride in all of us.

However, the report that Australian group felt unhappy over the rough treatment meted out to them posed some problems for the Kalmadi & Co.Now a very peculiar problem has become cause of worry for the organizers. The huge number of used condoms have choked the drains which has created a huge civic problem. The latest report says that these used condoms have been flushed down but this news has already created scene of embarrassment for the officials.

The Delhi government has made enough arrangements to keep the Games village above civic problems. The 34 teams having electrical, plumbing, carpeting and housekeeping experts are working in the Games village under the supervision of high officials to take note of housekeeping and cleanliness. However, this unprecedented turn of events has made the officials taken by surprise. It has now become open that condoms are in huge demand at the Games Village. That has made the officials install large condom vending machine which has at least 4,000 contraceptive packs. It has four master mastor cartons having 960 packets in each of them and each pack contains two condoms.

“We have installed a big condom vending machine which contains at least 4,000 contraceptives.According to reports from the Village, more than 2,000 condoms have been used so far. We will refill the machine, if need be,” a health official said. Not only this around 128 machines have been installed in whole Delhi to ensure smooth supply of condoms. The government is in no mood to allow sexually transmitted diseases rule the roost.

I am wondering have the players arrived to participate in games or enter in such wild activities ?I am being informed about the shortage of condoms at Vancouver Winter Olympics held this year in February where one lakh condoms got finished within 7000 athletes in just four days !!!!

It appears that our government has acted smart at least in this arena. It has made sufficient arrangements to ensure that athletes at least do not complain about shortage of condoms. Both Beijing and Sydney Olympics have seen huge sale of condoms. The government must have taken note of the sales of condoms in Games show.

The reaction of Commonwealth Games Federation boss Michael Fennell was pretty interesting.Remaining unfazed he said that it’s a positive development. “If that is happening, it shows there is use of condoms and I think that is a very positive story, that athletes are being responsible.” The practice of distributing free condoms has started from Barcelona Olympics held in 1992.Fennel also stated that “promoting safe sex is a responsible thing to do.”

However, Commonwealth Games Village officials have accused the media of sensationalizing the whole episode. The officials deny about condoms clogging drains of accommodation towers.Whatever be the reality,it’s quite clear that love for condoms among the athletes have attained a new height. What should I say about the whole development ?

In my eyes the athletes apart from creating record in the sporting events are also keeping an eye on the record related with use of condoms!!!!!
