भारतीय फिल्मो में नायिकाओ का रोल मार्फ़त मनीषा कोईराला और उर्मिला मातोंडकर
मनीषा कोईराला: इस बेहद प्रतिभाशाली अभिनेत्री को भी खराब समझौते करने पड़े और फिर भी हाशिये में जाना पड़ा!
भारतीय फिल्मो ने सौ सालो का फासला तय कर लिया है। ये अवधि काफी है इसके कुछ गुण दोषों पर नज़र डालने के लिये। भारतीय फिल्मी नायिकाओ के उत्थान पतन का जिक्र करना जरूरी है। भारतीय नायिकाओ के इस चरित्र को आधुनिक काल के दो अभिनेत्रियों मनीषा कोईराला और उर्मिला मातोंडकर के अभिनय ग्राफ पर नज़र डालने से बेहतर समझा जा सकता है। इसके पहले इस बात का जिक्र करना जरूरी हो जाता है कि जबसे भारतीय फिल्मे बन रही है तब से नायिकाओ का काम केवल पेड़ के आस पास टहल घूम कर नाचने कूदने का भर का ही था। अब भी कुछ नहीं बदला है। झरने की जगह स्विमिंग पूल आ गया है। पहले नायिकाएं कूल थी अभिव्यक्ति के मामले में पर जब से “वुमन ऑफ़ सब्सटेंस” का अवतरण हुआ तब से वो और अधिक बोल्ड हो चली है। कम कपड़ो में भी शालीनता की रक्षा की वकालत हो रही है। पहले महिला निर्देशकों, गीतकारो का अकाल सा था लेकिन अब ऐसा नहीं है। लेकिन इसके बाद भी ये कहा नहीं जा सकता कि नायिकाओ के स्पेस में कोई गुणात्मक परिवर्तन आया हो। जो स्थिति पहले थी वो अब भी है। या यूँ कहे कि अब जब पैसा बनाने की हवस, कॉर्पोरेट और माफियाओ का गठजोड़ अपने चरम उफान पर है तो गुणात्मक परिवर्तन की अपेक्षा रखना तारो का दिन में उगने का ख्वाब देखने के सामान है।
उर्मिला मातोंडकर और मनीषा कोईराला के करियर पर दृष्टि डालने से फ़िल्म में नायिकाओ के महत्त्व की एक दिलचस्प तस्वीर उभर कर आती है। मै मूलतः मेनस्ट्रीम सिनेमा की बात कर रहा हूँ। कला फिल्मो में तो हम देखते है शबाना आज़मी, स्मिता पाटिल, सुहासिनी मूले इत्यादि अभिनेत्रियों ने अच्छा काम किया और इसके साथ ही मेनस्ट्रीम सिनेमा में अच्छा काम किया। ये अलग बात है स्टार वैल्यू प्रधान मुख्य धारा के सिनेमा में इनके लिए ज्यादा कुछ करने के लिए था नहीं। सुष्मिता सेन जो कि एक्टिंग टैलेंट में ऐश्वर्या से कही आगे थी उनको तो आज के महिला निर्देशकों के उपस्थिति के बाद ज्यादा कुछ करने को नहीं मिला लेकिन फूहड़ अभिनय करने वाली ऐश्वर्या राय की झोली में कई बड़े बैनर की फिल्मे आयी। हर फ़िल्म में बकवास अभिनय करने के बाद भी आप बदन उघाड़े ऐश्वर्या को कैनंस फ़िल्म समारोह में देख सकते है। इसी से समझ में आ जाता है कि पॉपुलर सिनेमा में टैलेंट कम काम आता है कुछ और सतही समीकरण ज्यादा काम आता है।
उर्मिला ने मुमताज़ की तरह ही बचपन से फिल्मो में काम करना शुरू कर दिया। पिंजर और सत्या जैसी फिल्मो में काम कर चुकी उर्मिला एक बेहद समर्थ अभिनेत्री है लेकिन कैसी बिडम्बना है कि हमारी फ़िल्म इंडस्ट्री ने इन्हें बदन प्रधान अभिनेत्रियों में अग्रिम पंक्तियों ला खड़ा किया। इसके बाद वो राम गोपाल वर्मा कैम्प तक ही सिमट के रह गयी है। लेकिन आप उर्मिला की फिल्मे देखे तो समझ में आएगा कि वेस्टर्न वर्ल्ड ने जो एक्टिंग के मापदंड तय किये है उनमे उर्मिला शानदार रूप से खरी उतरती है। बल्कि उनसे बीस ही है क्योकि डांसिंग टैलेंट में अभी विदेशी अभिनेत्रियाँ इतनी सक्षम नहीं है जितनी की उर्मिला है। ये आपको तब दिखता है जब आप चमत्कार फ़िल्म में ट्रेन कम्पार्टमेंट में फिल्माया बिच्छू गीत देखते है।
अभिनय की जिस बारीकियो को उर्मिला ने “कौन” फ़िल्म में प्रदर्शित किया वो किसी साधारण टैलेंट से ओतप्रोत अभिनेत्री के बूते के बाहर है। इसलिए खेद होता है कि इतनी सक्षम अभिनेत्री को मुख्यधारा सिनेमा में बदन दिखाऊ दौड़ में शामिल होना पड़ा। एक सक्षम अभिनेत्री को रेस में बने रहने के लिए क्यों बदन दिखाने की कला में आगे रहना पड़ता है? ये परिपाटी किसने स्थापित की? आप कह सकते है बाज़ार की बड़ी पूँजी लगी होती है पर पूँजी तो हालीवुड की फिल्मो में हमसे अच्छी लगती है पर टैलेंट से वो तो समझौता नहीं करते! खैर आज की नयी अभिनेत्रियों को देखे तो कुछ एक नामो को छोड़ दे तो अधिकतर के पाद टैलेंट तो कुछ नहीं लेकिन बिकनी पहनने में संकोच ना करने के कारण वो मुख्य धारा में कामयाब है। यहाँ तक कि एक हाल की अभिनेत्री ने जिसने पहली फ़िल्म में साधारण औरत का किरदार किया था उसने भी अपनी अगली ही एक अन्य फ़िल्म में बिकनी में आगाज़ किया!
मनीषा कोईराला के उदाहरण से आपको ये समझ में आ जाएगा कि हमारे यहाँ टैलेंट की समझ और परख कितनी है। मनीषा ख़ामोशी, बॉम्बे, गुप्त, मन और अकेले हम और अकेले तुम में शानदार अभिनय करने के बाद हाशिये पर चले गयी। यहाँ तक कि उनको अपने को सुर्खियों में रहने के लिए निम्न स्तर की फिल्मो में काम करना पड़ा। साफ़ है कि उगते सूरज को सलाम करने वाली इस इंडस्ट्री ने मनीषा को तज दिया। आज कैंसर से जूझती मनीषा को इंडस्ट्री संज्ञान में लेना उचित नहीं समझती। स्पष्ट है ग्लोबल वर्ल्ड में जो पैसा पैदा कर सकता है चाहे चमड़ी बेचकर ही क्यों न बस उसी की क़द्र है। टैलेंट है तो ठीक और नहीं है तब भी ठीक अगर आप पैसा पैदा करने के समीकरण में फिट बैठते है तो। सनी लियोन और वीना मालिक का चमकता सितारा तो यही बताता है। उर्मिला और मनीषा के प्रतिभा को सलाम कि इस अंधे युग में भी टैलेंट के महत्त्व को बरकरार रखा।

Globalization has reduced differences in geographical terms. But, at the same time, it has also changed the geography in a crude way by mindless destruction of flora and fauna. The sad thing about whole affair is that the stories depicting better aspects of globalization do reach us regularly but the negative sides either get censored or, for that matter, fail to get extensive coverage. Just to take an example, the commercials promote McDonald’s pizzas and burgers but are there enough advertisements which highlight the negative effect of consuming them? Globalization believes in the fact that “all that glitters is gold”. It has nothing to do with pains of exploited workers who work in MNCs like a caged parrot, having no power to execute their discretion other than one serving the interests of global masters.
Sometimes back S Ambika, a 22 year old woman factory-worker, permanently employed at Nokia Telecom Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Sriperumbadur in Kancheepuram district of Tamil Nadu, got killed in a tragic way when she tried to repair the jam inside the loader machine. It proved to be fatal exercise for her since she was not a technician, but she still came to do that to meet the production targets. A wait for the technicians meant slowing the pace of production! That’s one of the stories, which reveal in sad way the plight of people working in MNCs.
Vaibhav Mani Tripathi, a by-product of Jawahar Lal University (JNU), in his research paper titled, “Democracy and globalization: Are they really compatible”, highlights the ways and means employed by the MNCs to ensure growth in democracies across the globe. ” In democracies of third world, which are new and have lesser degree of accountable governments; methods of bribery, and loot system were adopted by MNCs, in order to get established. By dealing in such ways MNCs get some illegal relaxations and manage to cut cost by getting cheapest labour and denying rules of pollution control etc. In democracies, which are most established and transparent, MNCs change their techniques. By promising high taxes and employment to countrymen, they demand for special industrial estates or special economic zones. This is the biggest irony of Globalization. They demand tax relaxations in order to get established and they promise government to pay huge aid for fighting poverty, pollution and social evils like AIDS!”
One having a close look at the progress stories of various countries, especially the nations trying to emerge as economic giants, one would find that exploitation of workers along with rapid destruction of ecological balance are the integral part of every such story! Before I contrast the happenings in two different countries, India and Peru, to highlight the woes of globalization, I wish to highlight grave tale of negligence which suggests that so-called progress is not only destroying cherished values but also destroying cultural artifacts. One of Belize’s largest Mayan pyramids, which remained in existence for more than 2,300 years, got destroyed by a construction crew involved in a road project.The company used the structure’s limestone walls as road fill! In fact, Time Magazine reports that “much of the monumental architecture at Belize’s San Estevan site, which dates back to 800 B.C., was bulldozed during the late 1990s to provide material for roads.”
From Belize in Central America, now, let’s move to Peru in South America to notice the impact of gold rush in amazon! The lust for gold in other nations keeps increasing but the heavy price other nations pays to satiate the lust never becomes subject of discussion in mainstream media. True, there is lack of jobs and illegal gold mining ensures survival of large number of families but then how can one ignore the dangerous consequences of deforestation in Amazon? A report issued by NASA says that ‘with the price of gold skyrocketing (360 percent in 10 years from 2001 to 2011), unlicensed miners began pouring into Peru’s Madre de Dios. They cleared 12,500 acres from the forest between 2003–2009. Landsat images showed local deforestation increasing at a rate of 26 percent per year.”
The report also highlights the fatal consequences of mercury used in the mining process. The extracts of mercury which after vaporization turn airborne contaminate the water resources, which later enter into the bodies of residents. A very recent study suggests “unsafe levels of the toxic metal in almost 80% of adults and 60% of fish sold at local markets” in Peru. The Peru’s mining department taking stern steps against illegal mining began raiding Madre de Dios. That has led to tense formation between miners, environmental activists and the authorities. However, it appears that such strict steps are now a necessity to reduce the loss of forest area in amazon, which has already lost 18,000 hectares. Needless to state, that Peruvian amazon is remarkable for its large degree of biodiversity.
Farmers Protesting In Peru!
India is also facing severe consequences caused by deforestation. One of the major causes of deforestation has been depletion of forests to extract minerals of various types. Expansion of agriculture, timber harvesting and shifting cultivation are some of the prime reasons for loss of forest area in India. However, another grim consequence has been displacement of tribal people, leading to militant movement like Naxalism. It establishes something quite well that pattern of exploitation in India and Peru is one and the same and in both the places original inhabitants are in direct conflict with the authorities. If Peru is tormented by illegal gold mining, India is haunted by illegal coal mining and diamond mining! The “Coalgate scam” has clearly revealed that how sensitive rulers of this nation have been while dealing with mineral resources of this nation. In other words, globalization has ensured huge profits for government and private bodies but the same profit never got distributed to tribal people-ones who were responsible for protecting these resources. On the contrary, they got displaced and faced bullets instead of receiving rewards for their indigenous efforts. Now if we see such developments in light of environmental issues, like erratic weather pattern in Indian subcontinent, the situation is pretty grim.
Even Children Protested In Nandigram!
It’s good that people, the ones affected by government’s poorly planned projects, have learnt to come in conflict with the authorities. Nandigram bears testimony to the fact that the Special Economic Zones, not taking care of interests of people in judicious way, shall always meet fierce opposition from people. The farmers in Uttar Pradesh also entered in violent protests in year 2011 over land acquisition policy framed by the state government. The trend pattern involved is that big corporate houses either forcibly acquire the land or they come to acquire it in fraudulent means by keeping in dark the actual content of the deal. The Allahabad High Court staying Ganga Expressway project, expressed deep anguish the way it got initiated without having environmental clearance! This project involving JP Group required acquisition of huge lands situated in the alluvial belt and still no homework was done on part of state government.
Even Indian Farmers Are Protesting!
One can notice that how rules get manipulated to benefit big corporations, caring a damn for the interests of people. In fact, the concerns related with environment also get neglected. It’s not hard to decipher that two nations even if they are situated in different continents could still exhibit similar pattern of exploitation and corruption. Globalization has not only roped in similar lifestyle patterns across the globe but also introduced identical methods of corruption. And who is the victim? The underprivileged, who never gets a chance to visit McDonald, who never gets a chance to buy gold ornaments, and who also never gets a chance to drive SUV on Expressways! Noam Chomsky sounds quite right when he says that ‘ Market discipline is perfect for poor people in El Salvador, or working mothers in the slums. They have to learn responsibility, but not the rich and the powerful. They have to be protected.”

Shyam Benegal: The director who defied stereotypes!

Shyam Benegal has dared to enrich cinematic landscape by making movies loaded with radical ideas. For example, in his movie Ankur he was successful in giving the impression that it’s not impossible to to turn the tables in society dominated by feudalistic perceptions. The movie successfully portrayed that awakening among the common people would alone bring revolutionary changes. His movies mainly centered around social and political dilemmas. His movie Manthan, which went on to win National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi in 1977 was based on White Revolution of India (Operation Flood). Interestingly, the story was penned by none other than Dr. Verghese Kurien, hailed as the Father of the White Revolution in India.
One can notice that Shyam Benegal was a sensitive filmmaker moved by the plight of the underprivileged. His movies dealt with the power of common man and his ability to emerge successful in society governed by anti-human tendencies. In movie Manthan we find that poor farmers in Gujarat, learn to rise above individualistic tendencies to form the Co-operative Milk Producers’ Union. The film highlights the impact of caste-politics found in Indian villages.
Smita Patil In Bhumika!
This maker of New or Alternate Cinema chose to flirt with complex themes in a masterly way. His movie Bhumika dealt with trials and tribulations of a woman in search of suitable place for herself in society dotted with so many prejudices. Smita Patil once again played her part perfectly to highlight the various shades of Usha, the movie actress in love with various men, even with a married person much older than her age! One of the best things about Shyam Benegal is that he not only explores bold themes but also at the same time keeps experimenting with the style which sometimes makes us remind of Satyajit Ray. Nishant, Mandi and Suraj Ka Satvan Ghoda (1993) prove that point quite well. Interestingly, Suraj Ka Satvan Ghoda is a novel penned by well known Hindi writer Dharmavir Bharati, who hailed from Allahabad.
As a matter of fact, he tried to force viewers to don the thinking cap by bringing to the fore various shades of problems plaguing the society. He helped many actors, including Smita Patil and Naseruddin Shah, to name a few, to carve a niche for themselves in the world of realistic cinema. However, having said that, let me state that directors of Parallel cinema are responsible for failing to interpret the mood of viewers with the changing times. Though it’s an uphill task to project complex themes in lighter vein, the art to present complex themes in a palatable way has to be learnt by the movie-makers. This has been learnt quite well by directors like Shekhar Kapoor and Kundan Shah but most of them have struggled to give way to flexibility.
It’s a harsh reality that satellite channels and Doordarshan have been held hostage to a variety of cheap entertainment- all in the name of catering to the taste of new generation. To bring a change, it’s necessary that art filmmakers learn to blend their serious themes with interesting styles. Needles to state that Shyam Benegal has the capacity to set a good precedent in this regard as well.

In Conversation With A Great Writer: Discussion On Impact Of Movies With Sunanda K.Datta-Ray
Sunanda K.Datta-Ray: One of the writers who impressed me!
The Indian cinema would complete 100 years of its glorious existence this year. It’s a fitting occasion to discuss the impact of movies on average cinema-goers. The Indian movies have always created deep impact in shaping the psyche of a large section of people. Sometimes back I had an interesting discussion with Sunanda K.Datta-Ray-the Editor of The Statesman (Calcutta and New Delhi) and contributor for the International Herald Tribune and Time Magazine- about the impact of movies. In fact, he was so impressed with my views that he asked me as to why I did not send it to The Telegraph ( Kolkata Edition) for publication for whom I was a regular letter contributor in those days. The discussion is of paramount importance in wake of centenary milestone achieved by the Indian cinema this year.
The discussion, which took place in year 2006, was centered around movie Lage Raho Munna Bhai, directed by Rajkumar Hirani and produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra. The character played by Sanjay Dutt in this movie had the capability to interact with spirit of Gandhiji. The movie turned out to be a blockbuster besides restoring the faith of common people in simple gestures conveying heartfelt emotions. What an irony that the actor who taught us Gandhigiri is now about to face imprisonment after being convicted in the 1993 Mumbai blasts case!

My Viewpoint:
This has reference to the article” Following Fashion“ published in The Telegraph (Oct.07,2006). Though Lage Raho Munnabhai, due to pompous and pretentious treatment of its theme does no justice to Gandhian ideology, it can be safely stated that such movies come to stir the hearts and minds of an average person. After all, parallel cinema with complex presentation fails to strike a chord with man on street. What’s important is that inherent message must reach to the masses.
No doubt, well made commercial movies do not respect sense of proportion yet they leave an indelible impression on inert souls. Vidhu Vinod Chopra should be complimented for defying stereotypes with interesting version of serious issue, which provoke us to do some soul-searching. Regarding Gandhism it can be safely stated that the country which has not been able to showcase Gandhi’s ideals in real perspective does not deserve the right to probe their utility in such a casual manner. It’s better that we learn to anticipate Gandhism with the right bent of mindset instead of mirroring it in our prejudices.

Thank you for your message. I greatly appreciate your comment but wish you had sent it instead to The Telegraph for publication so that there could have been a wider discussion. Such examination and analysis are necessary. No one could be happier than I if the film do have the effect you mention. My fear is that while no one will actually act on the principle of the dharna outside the Lucky’s house, lots of people will repeat catch phrases and that Gandhigiri will be exploited in many commercial ways. My internet already has a pop up about Shabana Azmi practicing Gandhigiri years ago!

JeremySeabrook: Never Missed To Say Right Words Always!
In the long writing career, spanning over nearly two decades, I got many chances to interact with enlightened minds and share with them a piece of my mind in matters pertaining to critical issues. A long back ago when I was regular contributor for The Statesman’s Viewpoint Column ( Calcutta Edition), I came in touch with Jeremy Seabrook who was then writing for one of its popular columns.
This conversation related with falling standards of education system took place after I came to read his article” Learning Revisited” published in The Statesman on March 14, 2005.

My Viewpoint:
Your write-up is an eye-opener, allowing one to reckon with the hidden facets of education. I am appalled at the manner in which institutions offering so-called gems of knowledge, which in reality are antithetical to creative tendencies lying latent within the recipients, have solidified their base. One reason for it could be that parents are now no longer interested in “value-oriented” teaching methods, simply because it stands in the way of attaining ‘name and fame’. No wonder this could be the reason behind the mind-boggling network of coaching factories, which are making huge profit in the name of offering conductive atmosphere for cracking the entrance tests.
This attitude of parents has brought a sea change in the attitude of present day students, who weigh everything in materialistic yardsticks or, in other words, in rupee:dollar ratio. After all, who has time for values in the fast-paced life of ours! The real quest for supreme knowledge would always remain a distant dream in absence of change of mindset, especially the parents. Well, it’s never too easy to change mindset without giving way to measures mired in transparent means. What has guaranteed failure of projects in this regard has been wide gap between theory and practice besides infrastructural bottlenecks. Let’s realize that mere propaganda is not going to solve this issue.
Unfortunately, this is what both Left and Right wings are used to. Their stances, diametrically opposite to each other, have wiped out the vigour of those wishing to make worthwhile contributions, so much so that if one does not yield to their outdated notions one is bound to invite troubles of all sorts. The message is clear: Rise above ideological fanaticism to stop the degradation of education system, something so imperative to prevent the innocent minds turning into robot.
Vivekananda rightly remarked that ” education is not the amount of information that is put into your brain and run riot there, undigested, all life. We must have life-building, man-making, character-making assimilation of ideas”. Will anyone please translate this into reality?

Many thanks for your helpful and kind e-mail. Indeed, education has become not an end in itself, noble and worthwhile, but an instrument for material gain and industrial conformism. In this sense, of course, the educational system is only an emanation of the society that produces it, and an expression of the social values and mores of which it is a symptom. Intervention for change involves a complete change in the social and moral structures of globalism-no small thing, but a project we should not abandon simply because of its apparent attainability.

भारतीय गणतंत्र: गुंडों और अय्याशो पे टिका एक भीड़तंत्र

कहते तो है कि भारतीय गणतंत्र बड़ी उम्मीदें जगाता है विश्व के उन कोनो में जहाँ और सरकारें तमाम तरीको के विरोधाभासों में लिपटी हुई है। उनके लिए भारत में गणतंत्र का लोप एक खतरे के घंटी से कम नहीं है। खासकर जब चीन से तुलना की जाती है तो ये जरूर दर्शा दिया जाता है कि वह पे कितनी दमनकारी व्यवस्था है जहा लोगो पे जुर्म तो होते है, लोगो को सताया तो जाता है लेकिन सेंसरशिप की वजह से कुछ सामने नहीं आ पाता। पडोसी मुल्क पाकिस्तान में फैली अराजकता को देखे जो वैश्विक आतंकवाद का पालन पोषण करने वाला है तो अपना देश किसी स्वर्ग से कम नहीं लगता। तो क्या परिस्थितयां वाकई इस देश में इतनी सुधरी है? लगता तो नहीं है अगर हम सूक्ष्म निगाहों से देखे तो।
इसकी एक वजह ये है कि इस देश में सरकार जरूर आम लोगो के दम से बनती है लेकिन उसका आम लोगो के दुःख दर्द से इसका कोई सरोकार नहीं। एक दिखावटी लगाव जरूर है लेकिन वह मूलतः अपने को सत्ता में बनाये रखने भर का जुगाड़ भर है बस। ये कैसी बिडम्बना है कि जिस सरकार ने गरीबी हटाओ का लक्ष्य दिया उसी ने इमरजेंसी भी थोपी इस देश में। सारी संवैधानिक संस्थाओ को जानबूझकर कमजोर किया गया। ये उस सरकार के द्वारा किया गया जिसके नुमाइन्दे आज लोगो के सुरक्षा का दम भरते है। हमारी भोली जनता जनार्दन फटी शर्ट में हाथ में मोबाईल लिए ये समझती है कि हम किसी सुनहरी दुनिया में प्रवेश करने वाले है भविष्य में। इस मृग मरीचिका में भारत वासी उलझे हुए है। क्रिकेट, लौंडिया, बेतहाशा पैसा कमाने का जूनून किसी भी कीमत पर ये हमारे देश के नेशनल पैशन है। लोगो को की इस बात से परवाह नहीं है कि उनकी चमचमाती गाड़ी गाली गलौज, खुले मैनहोल और गड्ढो में सड़क पर चल रही है बढ़ी हुई पेट्रोल के कीमतों के साथ ही बढती रफ़्तार के साथ।
मार्कंडेय काटजू, भूतपूर्व सुप्रीम कोर्ट जज, लोगो को मूढ़ तो मानते है लेकिन ये जरूर दर्शा देते है कि साहब इस देश में असल शासन तो सिर्फ आम जनता का ही है। उनके हिसाब से यहाँ राजशाही नहीं प्रजातन्त्र है जहा हर अधिकारी जिसमे नेता और जज भी शामिल है आम आदमी का गुलाम भर है। ये नौकर है और आम आदमी उनका “मास्टर” है। जैसे काटजू साहब लोगो की क्षुद्र मानसिकता पर सवाल उठाते है उसी तरह मुझे भी समझ में नहीं आता कि इनके इतने हसीन इंटरप्रिटेशन को, इतने सिम्प्लिस्टिक अप्प्रोच को किस निगाहों से देखा जाए जहा पे किसी ख़ास पार्टी के गुंडे इसलिए पुलिस अधिकारी को अपनी जीप के पीछे लखनऊ के सडको पर घसीटते हुए ले गए थें कि उसने प्रतिरोध किया था उनके गलत तरीको का। या कोई अदना सा पुलिस का कांस्टेबल भी किसी प्रोफेसर को सडको पर माँ बहन की गालिया दे सकता है जरा सी बात पर। तो आम आदमी को क्या इज्ज़त मिलती होगी सरकारी चमचो से ये सहज ही सोचा जा सकता है। आप भी सोचे कि हमारा गणतंत्र कितना वास्तविक है जो मेरी नज़रो में अय्याशो और गुंडों पे टिका भीड़तंत्र है । धूमिल की ये पंक्तिया आज भी बहुत सटीक बैठती है:
“हर तरफ धुआं है
हर तरफ कुहासा है
जो दांतों और दलदलों का दलाल है
वही देशभक्त है
अंधकार में सुरक्षित होने का नाम है-
तटस्थता। यहां
कायरता के चेहरे पर
सबसे ज्यादा रक्त है।
जिसके पास थाली है
हर भूखा आदमी
उसके लिए, सबसे भद्दी
गाली है
हर तरफ कुआं है
हर तरफ खाईं है
यहां, सिर्फ, वह आदमी, देश के करीब है

Vividh Bharati Should Now Be Either Known As Rafi Bharati or Vigyapan Bharati!
Prasar Bharati: Dictated By Propaganda!
Sometimes you avoid taking note of an important development, treating it to be a passing affair-something born out of coincidence. However, that’s not always the case. The hindsight, sooner or later, proves beyond doubt that this development was part of some prevailing well-executed pattern. The people involved in projecting such pattern try their level best to make you feel as if all is taking place naturally but is it possible for a pregnant lady to hide her pregnancy status for long? There comes a point when you cannot lie any further.
I am great fan of Rafi but the way his songs are being played in atrocious manner, on the Vividh Bharati, really makes me sad. The Vividh Bharati has stooped down to all time low dirty manipulations, being dictated by propaganda, sponsored by people behind the curtain. The songs of Rafi are being virtually pushed down your throat 24/7. It appears Vividh Bharati is not in mood to tolerate even those listeners, who have somehow managed to boast of their affiliation with this great institution of yesteryear. It’s no secret that majority of listeners have already given way to other channels, being disappointed over its functioning style. Anyway, anyone aware of how the bureaucratic mind functions in this nation, are not at all surprised over the falling standards.
Not a long time ago, a beautiful female voice, probably from Indore, registered her protest in a strong way in one of the programmes based on listener’s choice. She said: ” You people ( the announcers) are constantly playing cheap numbers, all in the name of listener’s choice, but it appears to me that there’s more than meets the eye. It’s simply not possible that these tasteless numbers have replaced haunting melodies of yesteryear without shrewd maneuvering.” I was really inspired by her bold outburst but constraints of time prevented me from having a take on the whole issue in a strong way. Given the unholy nexus, which prevails inside the corridors of the Vividh Bharati, a strong protest has become need of the hour. That’s because silence at this moment would appear criminal. How can any conscious listener keep quiet, over this drama, taking place inside the studios of Vividh Bharati?
Earlier it appeared that royalty might be the reason why songs of Rafi were being played in this mindless fashion. However, it’s just the tip of the iceberg. At this point of time, when India stands on the threshold of embracing some bold changes, the old minds refuse to part ways with mediocre means, which keep intact their lust for power. Remember, when governments change, the premier government bodies also shift their loyalties. There is a major overhaul within all government bodies, and key positions get shifted to people in tune with the agenda of government. The same thing has taken place inside Vividh Bharati as well. It’s not presenting programmes: It’s sponsoring propaganda.What else could one assume after presentation of Baba Azmi- Shabana Azmi’s interview on the eve of Bhaiyya Dooj -a Hindu festival dedicated to celebration of bonding that exists between sisters and brothers?
If these dirty tricks were not enough, it now gave way to subtle form of marketing. Sample this: The interview of Aamir Khan was presented at a time when Aamir Khan’s movie was scheduled to be released the very next day. The interview which was in two parts, ended on November 29, 2012 and the movie Talash got released on November 30, 2012. Is that’s the way a government body should function in this nation, which boasts of secular credentials?
The job of government institution is to function in impartial manner, without offering undue advantage to any particular group in name of religion etc. After all, if the approach gets biased, how are we supposed to get real information? The Vividh Bharati is one of the few institutions, which enjoy close rapport with people living in remote areas of India, and so it’s an ideal medium to apprise people about key issues in honest manner, so that they can have real picture- the ultimate truth. But now I have every reason to believe that it’s now no longer reliable. More so, in the wake of Rafi madness, which has led to marginalization of all other geniuses in the world of movie and music. It has gagged the voice of other beautiful singers.
In fact, its foreign counterpart, Radio Ceylon, is performing superbly. Not only it’s sincerely devoted to the cause of music but also it’s picture of perfection in presentation of programmes. It’s not insensitive in suggesting conscious listeners that minting money is the first choice of commercial services! A senior journalist from my city, Allahabad, is pretty shocked about Vividh Bharati’s new-found love for lowering the volume of song and subsequent announcement of details, the moment a song gets played. Above all, he is unhappy with the current lot of announcers, who have little patience for presentation of necessary details. Unfortunately, his demand to make the presentation of details, for one more time, at the end of each song, has fallen on deaf ears.
Anyway, if one is unsure about the credibility of facts presented in this article, why not tune in to Vividh Bharati and check out the facts for yourself? And, I am sure listeners would not fail to notice insipid Rafi numbers, vulgar modern numbers, programme carved to sell a product, or if all these three are missing, then be prepared to be tortured by a repeat telecast! I think it’s time for the Vividh Bharati to have a new name: Vigyapan Bharati or Rafi Bharati! Anyway, it’s time for sincere lovers of Vividh Bharati to find solace in singing of Begum Akhtar, crooning straight from the heart “Aye Mohabbat Tere Anzam Pe Rona Aaya”.

कभी कभी आप चीजों को आप ये कह के गौर नहीं करते कि चलिए हो सकता है ये महज एक इत्तेफाक हो। लेकिन आप ध्यान दे तो आप पायेंगे कि सब में एक वीभत्स पैटर्न शामिल है। कोशिश लोगो की जो इस पैटर्न को परदे के पीछे रह के चला रहे है ये यही होती है कि आपको खबर न लगने पाए मगर एक प्रेग्नेंट औरत कब तक ये झूठ बोल सकती है कि डिलीवरी जैसी कोई बात नहीं। मै खुद रफ़ी के गीतों को बहुत पसंद करता हूँ पर ये रफ़ी के नाम पर जो तमाशा विविध भारती पर हो रहा है वो दुखद है। हद हो गयी है कि किसी न किसी बहाने रफ़ी के गीतों को प्रोग्राम कोई हो आप पे थोप दिया जा रहा है। शायद विविध भारती अपने बचे खुचे श्रोताओ को भी अपने चैनल से भगाना चाहता है। सरकारी दिमाग ऐसे ही काम करते है।
बहुत पहले किसी महिला श्रोता ने सुंदर आवाज़ में पर बुलंद तरीके से अपनी शिकायत एक फरमायशी प्रोग्राम में रखी थी जो शायद इंदौर से थी कि “विविध भारती पे आप जो ये लगातार नए गीत ये कह के बजा रहे कि लोगो ने आपसे कहे है ये सब मुझे सुनियोजित लगता है क्योकि इतने बड़े पैमाने पे लगातार सिर्फ इसी टाइप के फूहड़ नए गीतों का बार बार बजना और अच्छे पुराने गीतों का बिल्कुल ही गायब हो जाना ये सिर्फ लोग ऐसा चाहते है ये ही एक वजह नहीं हो सकती।” उस की बातो से मै पूरी तरह से इत्तेफाक रखता था क्योकि मुझे भी ऐसा एहसास हो चला था। पर समयाभाव के कारण कुछ लिख नहीं पाया और बात आई गयी हो गयी। लेकिन अब लगता है कि विविध भारती ने सभ्य हदों को पार कर दिया है सो ख़ामोशी अब क्रिमिनल हो जायेगी।
पहले लगता था कि रायल्टी एक वजह हो सकती है कि सिर्फ रफ़ी ही रफ़ी विविध भारती के फलक पर उभरे लेकिन बात इससे भी आगे की है। इस वक्त संस्था में वही गणित काम कर रहा है कि जब सरकारे बदलती है तो आपके अपने ख़ास आदमी महत्त्वपूर्ण संस्थानों पर काबिज हो जाते है फिर कोई काम नहीं होता है सिर्फ वही बाते होती है जो प्रोपगंडा चाहता है। इस वक्त विविध भारती पर यही हो रहा है। और विविध भारती पर मार्केटिंग का भी भूत शामिल हो गया है उसकी एक झलक आप को इस उदहारण से मिल सकती है कि आमिर खान का इंटरव्यू प्रसारित होता है “तलाश” के रिलीज़ के वक्त। क्या सरकारी संस्थाएं ऐसे काम करती है? लेकिन विविध भारती भी इसी गंदे समीकरणों में शामिल गया ये बहुत दुखद है। क्योकि आम जनता के पास ये करीब था तो उनको सच बताने की जिम्मेदारी बनती थी या अच्छा मनोरंजन जिसमे सभी प्रतिभाशाली गीतकारो संगीतकारों, गायकों का जिक्र सामान रूप से होता पर रफ़ी नाम का ढोल पीटने का ठेका विविध भारती ने ऐसा ले लिया है कि कोई और आवाज़ उभर ही नहीं रही है।
इससें कही अच्छा काम रेडियो सीलोन पर होता है। वे अपने देश के नहीं होते हुएं भी संगीत के प्रति ईमानदार है, संवेदनशील है। कम सुने हुए गुणी संगीतकारों को हमेशा उभारते है उनका उल्लेख करके, उनके अच्छे कामो का उल्लेख करके समय से। विविध भारती पर ठीक इसका उल्टा हो रहा है। कमर्शियल सर्विसेस के नाम पर अच्छे गीतों को काट पीट कर विज्ञापन बजाये जाते है। किसी को लेख की प्रमाणिकता पर संदेह हो तो विविध भारती चैनल ट्युन करके के देख ले अगर वाहियात नए गीत नहीं बज रहे होंगे तो निश्चित ही रफ़ी का कोई गीत या विज्ञापन बज रहा होगा, मार्केटिंग चल रही होगी, कोई पुराना प्रोग्राम रिपीट हो रहा होगा। तो क्यों नहीं प्रसार भारती विविध भारती का नाम विज्ञापन भारती या रफ़ी भारती रख देती है? विविध भारती से अपने प्रेम को लेकर बेगम अख्तर की यही ग़ज़ल गूँज रही है कि “ए मोहब्बत तेरे अंजाम पे रोना आया”.

भीड़ का मनोविज्ञान: अन्धो के देश में काने राजा बन कर उभरते है!
इस का मतलब ये नहीं कि मै बाल ठाकरे की नीति या राजनीति का समर्थक हूँ। कतई नहीं। लेकिन एक ठाकरे को कोसना मै जायज़ नहीं मानता क्योकि इस हमाम में कौन नंगा नहीं? तो सिर्फ ठाकरे से घृणा क्यों? सिर्फ ठाकरे से दूरी क्यों?
इसके पहले मै बाल ठाकरे की शोक यात्रा में उमड़ी भीड़ के बारे में कुछ कहूँ ये समझ लेना आवश्यक रहेगा कि प्रजातंत्र में संख्या बल बड़ा मायने रखता है।प्रजातंत्र का आधार ही यही है कि जिसके पीछे जनता वही हीरो बाकी सब जीरो अब चाहे उसने नंगा करके अपने को भीड़ जुटाई है या सबको दारू रुपैय्या बाँट कर। पर भीड़ के दम पर ही लोकतंत्र चलता है अब चाहे जनप्रिय नेता की बात भीड़ के बीच में बैठे कल्लू को या मंच पे बैठे सेठ किरोड़ीमल को समझ में आ रही हो या ना आ रही हो इससें किसी को क्या मतलब। भीड़ में है यही बहुत है। यही लोकतंत्र का माडल है जिसकी लाठी उसकी भैंस, और जिसके पास सबसे ज्यादा लाठी उसके पास पूरा देश।
इस तर्क के हिसाब से चले तो अल्पसंख्यको के दम पर राजनीति करने वालो के मुंह पर ठाकरे साहब मर कर भी कस कर तमाचा लगाने से नहीं चूँके। बाल ठाकरे का मै कोई प्रशंसक नहीं क्योकि मूलतः मै उग्र विचारधारा का समर्थक नहीं हूँ क्योकि उग्रता इस देश का स्वभाव कभी नहीं रहा है। लेकिन आसुरी प्रवत्ति से लैस बढ़ते लोगो का झुण्ड, अल्पसंख्यको के नाम पर होते रोज तमाशे, हिन्दुओ में फैलती कायरता के चलते तहत ये आवश्यक हो गया है कि कुछ शेरदिल नेता पैदा तो हो जो अपनी दहाड़ से कम से कम हिन्दुओ का उत्साह तो कायम रख सके नहीं तो कोई लालटेन जलाकर, कोई हाथी भागकर, कोई साइकिल दौड़ाकर जनता को नित प्रतिदिन बेवकूफ बना कर भीड़ जुटा रहा है। ऐसे में कोई देश को बाटने वाली विभाजनकारी ताकतों को को उनकी ही भाषा में जवाब देकर भीड़ जुटा गया तो इसमें हो हल्ला मचाने की क्या जरूरत है। इसमें इतना आश्चर्यचकित कर देने वाली क्या बात है।
क्या इसके पहले भीड़ जुटते नहीं देखी किसी ने? आप ने चुनाव की रैली नहीं देखी क्या? मुफ्त में लखनऊ आयेंगे और नेताजी का भाषण सुने ना सुने चिड़ियाघर में शेर के दर्शन करना नहीं भूलेंगे। अगले दिन अखबार में नेताजी का कहिन और भीड़ की फोटु दोनों मौजूद होंगे। और पीछे जाए भारत छोड़ो आन्दोलन में लगभग पूरा देश उमड़ पड़ा था। जय प्रकाश नारायण के आहवान पर क्या भीड़ नहीं उमड़ी थी? खैर उस भीड़ के तत्त्व अलग थें। इस इक्कीसवी सदी के भारत में जब सब नेता स्विस बैंक प्रेमी हो गए है, जब नेता गरीबी को नहीं गरीब को ही हटा दे रहे है, आतंकवादी नेताओ का शह पाकर सलाखों के पीछे बिरयानी काट रहे है तो ऐसे में भीड़ के होने के मायने भी बदल गए है।
वैसे आश्चर्य है कि बहुत से लोग ठाकरे को साम्प्रदायिक राजनीति करने वाला, उकसाने वाली राजनीति करने का आरोपी मानते है इसलिए अछूत मानते हुए अल्संख्यको की नज़रो में सेक्युलर बनने के लिए शोक यात्रा में नहीं शामिल हुएँ। मै इन विवेकी नेताओ से ये जानना चाहूँगा कि कौन सा नेता सही राजनीति कर रहा है? कौन नहीं राजनीति की दूकान चला रहा है? तो शुचिता का पाठ ठाकरे या मोदी जैसे हिन्दू नेताओ पर ही क्यों लागू होता है? तो क्या अलगाववादी नेता जो कश्मीर में पंडितो को मारकर, भगाकर आज़ादी मांग रहे है इनके नेता के शोक सभा में होना चाहिए? या इन नेताओ के शोक सभा में होना चाहिए जो सबसे मेहनती मजदूर के नाम पर राजनीति कर रहे है। मजदूर तो वही झुग्गी झोपड़ी वाले रहे लेकिन ट्रेड यूनियन के नेता एयर कंडिशन्ड केबिनो में जा पहुंचे। तो इन नेताओ के मरने पर भीड़ जुटनी चाहिये? या इन “हाथ की सफाई” वाले नेताओ के मरने पर मजमा लगना चाहिए जिनके कुकर्मो की लिस्ट इतनी लम्बी है कि यमराज के आफिसवाले वाले भी ना पढ़ पाए अगर चाहे तो। या राम लला के नाम पर सत्ता पाने वाले वाले पर राम को ही पीछे धकिया कर राजनीति करने वाले नेताओ के मरने पे भीड़ होनी चाहिए? तो ये बाल ठाकरे की शोकयात्रा में उमड़ी भीड़ पर जलने वाले, कुढने वाले, दूर रहने वाले जलते रहे, कुढ़ते रहे, सर नोचते रहे है।
बाल ठाकरे इन धर्म निरपेक्ष नेताओ से अच्छा नेता था। कम से कम उसका असली चेहरा सामने था। उसने नकाब ओढ़कर राजनीति नहीं की। पीठ पीछे घात लगाकर हमला नहीं किया। जो भी किया खुल कर सामने किया। यहाँ का खाकर कठमुल्लों की तरह विदेशी ताकतों की जय नहीं करता था। धर्म निरपेक्ष बनकर बिरयानी तो नहीं काटता था उन आतंकवादियों के साथ जो निरीह लोगो को हलाक करते थें। इस का मतलब ये नहीं कि मै बाल ठाकरे की नीति या राजनीति का समर्थक हूँ। कतई नहीं। लेकिन एक ठाकरे को कोसना मै जायज़ नहीं मानता क्योकि इस हमाम में कौन नंगा नहीं? तो सिर्फ ठाकरे से घृणा क्यों? सिर्फ ठाकरे से दूरी क्यों?
रही भीड़ की बात। तो मेरी नज़रो में भीड़ का आना ख़ास महत्त्व नहीं। कल शाहरुख खान इलाहाबाद में रंडी टाइप का ठुमका लगा जाए तो उजड्ड नौजवानों की बेकाबू भीड़ लगेगी चीखने चिल्लाने? तो क्या शाहरूख खान को मै इस भीड़ प्रदर्शन के बल पर पर बहुत बड़ा अभिनेता मान लूं? या कल को कोई ईमानदार आदमी मर जाए और सौ पचास तो छोड़िये दस आदमी भी न शामिल हो तो क्या मै उस आदमी को कमीना मान लूं और इस शोकयात्रा को भी फ्लाप या हिट शो मानने की कवायद में जुट जाऊं ?

ऐ ज़िन्दगी तुझसे मौत ज्यादा ईमानदार है
मौत के साथ साथ ही चलती है ज़िन्दगी
ये कैसी बिडम्बना है कि अक्सर मुझे बहुत से लोग मुझे मिले बताने वाले कि अहम् बुरी बला है, धन बेकार है इत्यादि इत्यादि। ये बाते सैकड़ो बार नर्सरी स्कूल से लेकर अब तक पढ़, सुन, आत्मसात और जहा तक संभव है जीवन में चरितार्थ भी कर चुका हूँ लेकिन अफ़सोस सिर्फ यही है कि महफ़िलो और तन्हाई में ऐसी बाते करने वाले अक्सर पद और ओहदों के पीछे भागने वाले अहम् के पुतले निकले। वफ़ा के आवरण में लिपटे धूर्त और मक्कार मिले। दोस्त हो या प्रेमिका उनका रंग एक सा ही निकला जैसे चांदी के प्याले में विष।
ताज्जुब है इसके बाद भी ज़िन्दगी मुझे भली भली सी लगती है। इसके बाद भी जीने के मायने उभर के आते है ज़िन्दगी की कैनवास पर। हो सकता है जिंदगी को अपने को और उधेड़ना बचा हो। लेकिन जीवन के शह मात टाइप के समीकरण में अब मेरी दिलचस्पी कहा। पहले भी कहा थी। इसलिए मै बहुत दिलचस्पी से जीवन के तमाशो को नहीं देखता। जो मेरे सामने आता है उसको पूरी तन्मयता से निभा कर आगे बढ जाता हूँ। मेरी नज़र में जीवन में आ जाना ही एक गलती है। एक डिवाइयन मजाक है। सब के लिए हो सकता है ये जीवन के तमाशे जीवन मरण का प्रश्न हो जाए मगर मेरा जीवन के तमाशे में कोई दिलचस्पी नहीं जिसके प्रत्येक अध्याय में छल कपट के नए किस्से हो। सबसे खूबसूरत क्षण के पीछे भी मक्कारी दबे पाँव आके दस्तक दे जाती है। सो कोई जीए मरे इस दर्द में भीं जीवन का खोखलापन एक शान्ति सा भर जाता है जीवन में।
कही पढ़ रहा कि मौत क्यों आती है या इसका आना क्यों जरुरी होता है। वो इसलिए कि ज्यादा जीये जाने से लोगो के वफ़ा के पीछे उनके असल स्वार्थ उभर के सामने आ जाते है। सो मरने से ये भ्रम बचा रह जाता है कि अपने कुछ अपने से थें। इससें बेहतर मौत के पक्ष में बात कुछ नहीं हो सकती। मै तो अक्सर मानता हूँ कि मरने का सुविधाजनक रास्ता हो, कोई सम्मानित शास्त्र सम्मत रास्ता हो तो बहुत से लोग ख़ुशी-2 मौत का वरण कर ले। भगत सिंह को जब फांसी की सजा सुनायी गयी तो वो बहुत खुश थे। उसकी एक वजह ये थी कि उन्हें खुशी थी मौत जल्दी आ गयी। जीते रहते थें तो कितने दाग और लग जाते उन पर। कितनी उनके और अवगुण लोगो के सामने प्रकट हो जाते।
देश के कानून भी गज़ब के है। आत्महत्या को जुर्म मानता है। पर उन परिस्थितयों को लगाम लगाने की कोई जिम्मेदारी नहीं लेता जो किसी को मौत के दरवाजे पर छोड़ जाते है। उनको कोई कसूरवार नहीं ठहराता जिन्होंने किसी को मरने के लिए मजबूर किया। किसी को उकसाना तभी जुर्म बनता है जब तक मामला कोर्ट में ना पहुचे। पर कितने ऐसे केस कोर्ट में पहुचते है। और कितनो को सजा होती है कितने वर्षो में? सही है समाज ही जुर्म करने को मजबूर करता है और समाज ही न्याय का ठेकेदार बन कर सजा देता है। गजब तमाशा है भाई ये।
खैर उन लोगो को जो आग लगा कर तमाशाई बनते है, मेरे मित्र होने का स्वांग करते है और अक्सर मुझसे पूछ लेने की गलती कर बैठते है कि आप लोगो से क्यों कम मिलते जुलते है या कि क्यों उनकी तरह जीवन की तमाम नौटंकी में शामिल क्यों नहीं है तो उनके लिए साहिर की ये पंक्तिया ही काफी है कि
“क्या मिलिए ऐसे लोगो से जिनकी फ़ितरत छुपी रहे,
नकली चेहरा सामने आये असली सूरत छुपी रही
खुद से भी जो खुद को छुपाये क्या उनसे पहचान करे,
क्या उनके दामन से लिपटे क्या उनका अरमान करे,
जिनकी आधी नीयत उभरे आधी नीयत छुपी रहे।”
और रहा जिंदगी के तमाशे की बात तो निदा फाज़ली ने इन कुछ लाइनों में जिंदगी की असलियत बयान कर दी है। मेरी नज़र में तो अपनी खूबसूरती से मुझ सीधे सादे मनई (इंसान) के मन को भरमाती जिंदगी का असली चेहरा यही है। और ऐसे जीवन में मेरी दिलचस्पी कभी नहीं हो सकती। हां जीते रहने सा दिखना एक अलग बात है।
”हर तरफ हर जगह बेशुमार आदमी,
फिर भी तनहाइयों का शिकार आदमी,
सुबह से शाम तक बोझ ढ़ोता हुआ,
अपनी लाश का खुद मज़ार आदमी,
हर तरफ भागते दौड़ते रास्ते,
हर तरफ आदमी का शिकार आदमी,
रोज़ जीता हुआ रोज़ मरता हुआ,
हर नए दिन नया इंतज़ार आदमी,
जिन्दगी का मुक्कदर सफ़र दर सफ़र,
आखिरी साँस तक बेकरार आदमी”
